The Project

Treated wastewater is an important part of the water cycle. It usually is fed into rivers, something that is acceptable from an environmental point of view but for the use in agriculture or industry the water often is unsuitable.

MULTI-ReUse closes this gap by the development and implementation of new procedures for the reuse of service water. It mainly is needed for industrial and agricultural purposes, for groundwater recharge and abroad also for the drinking water production.

The biggest task of MULTI-ReUse therefore is the development, demonstration and evaluation of a modular water treatment system, in order to offer service water in different qualities and volumes for the different purposes and to competitive prices.

MULTI-ReUse has four main objectives:

  • Provisioning and adaption of innovative, modular process chains for the production of defined water qualities and –volumes, based on regular treated wastewater
  • Monitoring procedures for the quality of the service water regarding health protection (hygiene) and plant protection (biofilms)
  • Evaluation of action alternatives on an economic and ecologic level, as well as evaluation of socio-cultural acceptance
  • Development of exemplary and marketable solutions for typical fields of application worldwide

The new approaches are developed at laboratory scale and then applied, tested and demonstrated at the pilot plant in the North of Germany.
